Shared with both Peugeot and Mini, the engine in your car experienced timing-chain problems (mainly a stretched chain) in both turbocharged and non-turbocharged variants and became obvious when the engine started making rattling noises, especially on cold start-ups or when idling. Eventually, the chain could fail and if this happened, the Peugeot 407 - ALL MODELS. PROBLEM - Noise from front wheel bearings. CAUSE - Poor construction of front wheel bearings. Applies only to wheel bearings manufactured by NSK. REPAIR - Replace the NSK front wheel bearing with SNR type. Peugeot 407 - ALL MODELS. PROBLEM - Punching from the front suspension when driving in curves or parking.

Verdict - 3.5/5. Make no mistake: the 407 is a good car. In fact, it does a few things quite brilliantly, and sports car dynamics and brave looks are two qualities that we hold in high regard. However, we do have reservations about the 407’s ride quality and practicality. It only just misses a four-star score.
